If you are a veteran diagnosed with mesothelioma, you are not alone — and you may be entitled to substantial compensation from the federal government in addition to any legal claims you file.

Military veterans account for approximately 30% of all mesothelioma cases in the United States. The U.S. military used asbestos extensively from World War II through the 1970s in ships, buildings, vehicles, and equipment. Service members were exposed without warning, without protective gear, and often without any knowledge of the risk.

The Veterans Administration (VA) now recognizes mesothelioma as a service-connected disease for many veterans, which opens the door to a range of benefits.

Why Are Veterans at Such High Risk?

Asbestos was used throughout the military for its fire-resistant and insulating properties. High-risk exposure environments included:

  • Navy ships — Engine rooms, boiler rooms, and sleeping quarters were heavily insulated with asbestos. Navy veterans are among the highest-risk group.
  • Shipyards — Civilians and military personnel who worked in shipbuilding and repair facilities faced heavy exposure.
  • Army barracks and buildings — Asbestos was used in floor tiles, ceiling tiles, insulation, and pipe fittings.
  • Air Force — Aircraft hangars, jet engine components, and brake pads contained asbestos.
  • Military vehicles — Gaskets, clutch linings, and brake components in military trucks and tanks used asbestos materials.

Mesothelioma has a latency period of 20–50 years, which is why many veterans diagnosed today were exposed during service decades ago.

VA Benefits Available to Mesothelioma Veterans

1. VA Disability Compensation

If your mesothelioma is determined to be service-connected (caused or worsened by your military service), you are entitled to monthly disability compensation.

The VA assigns a disability rating from 0% to 100%. Mesothelioma is typically rated at 100% due to its severity.

2026 VA disability compensation rates (monthly, 100% rating):

  • Single veteran: approximately $3,700–$4,200/month
  • With dependents: higher amounts based on family status

The VA also offers Special Monthly Compensation (SMC) for veterans who require regular aid and attendance.

2. VA Healthcare

Veterans with service-connected mesothelioma are entitled to free medical care at VA facilities, including:

  • Oncology treatment (surgery, chemotherapy, radiation, immunotherapy)
  • Palliative and hospice care
  • Mental health support
  • Home health services

3. Dependency and Indemnity Compensation (DIC)

If a veteran dies from service-connected mesothelioma, their surviving spouse and children may be entitled to DIC — a monthly benefit paid to eligible survivors.

2026 DIC rates: Approximately $1,600–$2,000/month for surviving spouses (plus additional amounts for dependent children).

DIC is separate from any legal wrongful death claim the family may pursue.

4. Camp Lejeune Claims

Marines and their family members who lived or worked at Camp Lejeune in North Carolina from August 1953 to December 1987 were exposed to contaminated drinking water containing benzene, trichloroethylene (TCE), perchloroethylene (PCE/PERC), and other toxic chemicals.

The Camp Lejeune Justice Act of 2022 allows affected veterans and family members to file federal tort claims for illnesses including mesothelioma and other cancers. These claims are separate from standard VA disability benefits.

VA Benefits vs. Legal Claims: Can I Pursue Both?

Yes. VA disability benefits and legal claims (lawsuits against manufacturers, asbestos trust fund claims) are completely separate avenues. Receiving VA disability compensation does not reduce or bar a legal claim.

Many veterans receive:

  • VA disability compensation (monthly)
  • VA healthcare (ongoing)
  • Asbestos trust fund payments (lump sum)
  • Legal settlement from solvent defendants (lump sum)

All simultaneously.

How to File for VA Mesothelioma Benefits

Step 1: Gather your service records

Request your military service records (DD-214 and service treatment records) from the National Personnel Records Center or through the VA's eBenefits portal.

Step 2: Get a mesothelioma diagnosis in writing

A formal diagnosis from a licensed physician or oncologist is required. VA claims should include pathology reports.

Step 3: Establish service connection

You must link your asbestos exposure to your military service. Your service records, deployment history, ship assignments, and occupational exposure evidence help establish this connection.

Step 4: File a VA disability claim

Claims can be filed online at VA.gov, by mail, or in person at a VA regional office. Consider using a Veterans Service Organization (VSO) such as the DAV, VFW, or American Legion to assist — their services are free.

Step 5: Work with a mesothelioma attorney

A specialized attorney can coordinate your VA claim with your legal claims to maximize total compensation.
